Sir, we need to find a way home. It seems that the Forerunner artifacts brought us here. We know that the Empire used the rift generator in Volantis to deliver Caltrons. That research station has been implicated in the Caltron research. It seems we delivered the vital packet of data from R-56X after the Kralien occupation was broken. Completing the bargain with the Nuhtahni seems vital.

That researcher may give us access to key information about the artifacts.

He regards her blandly. Strange isn’t it? Who says “never a cross word” these days?

Anyway, the ship tracking may already be started if we look in the data filtered out from Lts. Nhaima and Ironclad’s hunt for potential INI vessels.

I did attempt to reverse transmit a message to Hamilton, but I did not receive a reply. It would require a good bit of jiggery-pokery to route a message through to Promethean and direct an antenna appropriately, but I could certainly give it a go. Actually given how they were setup, I could look for similar potential receivers in a number of public message systems. If the marines have cleared the asteroid base there might be suitable transmission equipment set up there.

Lt. Cdr, Vaj? Welcome back, sir. I’ve been keeping an eye on routine channels while you were all away. I notice you had a public message delivery at Promethean before we departed.

“Baggage safely delivered. Harry ate his portion of the fifty Latin tons of pork with never a cross word. Hope to run into you in one of our dens of yore. -Johanssen, CO Nordottir

Does that mean anything to you, sir?

    …continues working feverishly

Sir, I see a personnel transfer posted. Kommandant Matsiyan is removed from command of ISN Invictus. He will report to INI Group-Leader Corrin of Atlantis Command. He is assigned as the territory liaison officer with Promethean Command and Fourth Hunter Group.

Oh, sorry, sir. When you didn’t say no, I did send to EC legal.

That was a little while ago. I know it has taken some time for reports to come in and for you to review them. I’ve been keeping tabs on routine traffic with Atlantis Command. There has been a noticeable drop-off in comms from Command support staff. I took the liberty of asking Lt. Xiph if he could use his ah, “access” to see what was going on. Apparently there has been a flood of traffic from the core worlds tieing up all their attention. A lot of the messages seem to be from legal and admin departments and a lot of “due process” workflows seem to be instantiated. Lt. Xiph thought that it has all the hallmarks of red-tape someone might use to slow down decision making procedures. Sources include highly-placed government offices. Someone seems to be querying the Void out of whatever is going on at the base.

Murmurs aside Might be obvious to us but we are the only ISN unit that has been out in Antara. It is on the far side of Hjorden. They might think twice about sending a force that way.

Lt. Quinn? I’ve just received a very nice thank you message for you from Admiral Lady Mundy. Apparently she will be sending a very strongly worded inquiry into the parentage of those organizing the Intelligence debrief, sir.

I can only assume she means to leverage any family connections.

Very good, sir. Let me send this note I prepared off to the Admiral’s secretary. taps a couple of times

As I understand it sir, the Kommandant is the grandson of the company Chairman and they get along quite well. I believe the Kommandant’s father is somewhat estranged. He runs the company’s safety program. The Chairman was a junior minister of trade back at the beginning of the empire when the big shipyards were drawing commerce to the new capital. I suspect he might be quite incensed if his grandson was being investigated by INI. I did see, sir, that the former Advocate General of the 3rd Hunter Group was also involved in the “Intelligence Analysis Conference”. There might be some kind of bias in the proceedings. Perhaps the EC legal office would be interested to know? taps again at his padd

Sir, I haven’t been able to clean up the transmission from Midshipman Hamilton any further, but I am pretty sure I have worked out how to reply back to that source if you wanted to.

Also, I looked up the relevant approach to Admiral Lady Mundy. I have forwarded to you a pre-addressed template targeted at her personal secretary and with some keywords regarding The Subkommandant that will probably get her attention if you have a message for her. Unless you would like me to put through a message on your behalf…

Sir! I hid a covert scan in systems background tasks watching for the TSN secure comm protocol. I just got a bite, but the connection is extremely tenuous. It seems to be relayed through a mining scow’s prospecting shuttle high off the ecliptic. Very unlikely to intersect another antenna. I’ll try to keep refining…

Aye, aye, sir. If any other officer has ideas I’ll gladly accept the help.

Long term, sir, from reading the logs and sensor analyses, it seems pretty clear that the Forerunner Artifacts were involved in the accident that brought us here. Principally some interaction of the jumpspace manipulator, which is what the ISN seemed to use in a very limited fashion in our last action against the Hegemony, and the artifact psionic interlink device that the Kraliens originally found in Hjorden, seem to have been responsible for migrating our mental essences across er… universes. That second artifact is what Prefect Romanova seems to be accusing Moritani of abusing.

Assuming we can somehow reverse engineer the circumstances, could we close off the possibility of further use within human timescales by destroying the artifacts?

yawning mightily, Subaltern Tam pauses in the doorway to stretch before heading to grab the next seat at the bar, still working his shoulders

May I… sirs? His eye flickers in the tiniest of winks, acknowledging the different etiquette

Tea, please Yu, black, thick and sweet. At least there’ll be no shortage of that for a while. I was helping Engineering collect and deploy the miniature transceivers that were in ECS Asia’s latest delivery and the clerk had tons of this stuff being unloaded. I noticed because there was a typical bunch of those luxury goods Co… er, mandant Matsiyan is partial to. Must be nice having relatives like that.

Actually, what do we know about the Imperium’s control of Caltrons? Do we know how they do it, how to stop it?
