Participant//This is still very much a work in progress, and I’m quite comfortable changing anything that conflicts with what already exists.
Race: Oru
Classification: Genetically Modified
-Selectively bred (then genetically engineered) to withstand long exposure to sun for agricultural labor. This developed into being partially autotrophic to be easier to feed.
-A byproduct of this, as they developed into a space-faring race, was that they are more radio-resistant than many other sentient races. As agriculture became more automated, the Oru became used in power plants, and later, reactors of starcraft. Their radio-resistance protecting them from some of the radiation they were exposed to. They became the de facto engineering crewmen of most Skaraan vessels.
Personality Traits:
-Docility. Despite decades of freedom, the centuries of genetic and psychological conditioning have become part of their culture. They find it extremely difficult to initiate conflict. They instead seek for ways to help others save face to avoid conflict. The idea of arguing with a superior is completely unheard of. This is slowly changing, as individual thinkers among the Oru start exploring new ways of being and thinking.-Rebelliousness. Alternately, those who are aware of their past often overcompensate by being overly rebellious, particularly to non-Oru sources of authority.
-Industrious. Oru feel ill at ease when not doing something. They often come across as fussy cleaners, or hyperactive, constantly on the go. This is more common among those who were raised in slavery than those born on Tsev.
Physical Desciption:Green skinned species with pointed ears, and a semi-prehensile tail. Their average height is that of human females for both genders. Their build is typically slight. Their eyes are most commonly yellow, but shades of green, orange, and rarely, brown, are also known.
Relations:
History:
-Originally from the same planet as the Skaraan and enslaved by them. Became a commodity to be sold and traded among several neighboring races.-During the first Second Torgoth Incursion, their existence was discovered by the USFP. Whenever Skaraan vessels were captured, the Oru were freed.
-Eventually, enough Oru were liberated to settle a small colony on Tsev. This has been a rapidly growing colony with nearly all Oru freed in subsequent conflicts going directly there. There is also a small “underground railroad” of sorts to ferry escaped Oru from Skaraan space.
Culture:
-Culture was almost entirely wiped out. Most of what is known about their former culture comes from Skaraan records obtained and scraps of painstakingly preserved individual artifacts or lore.-Art: Music, particularly singing, is the highest form of art in their culture. In fact, it is a positive trait to have a lyrical quality to the way one speaks.
-Religion: There is no established religion. Any religious beliefs there may have been have been lost.
-Genders: 2. male and female. Very little sexual dimorphism. In both genders, there is no taboo on nudity. Sex is viewed as important for procreation, particularly since the free population of Oru is still quite small. However, there is a growing concept of recreational sex. It is different from humans, and still developing. Women hold most of the social power in society. In servitude, women were most able to hold onto, and pass on, any cultural traditions from before.
Family: In many ways all Oru are family. Because they were often separated from biological family by the Skaraan, they had to learn to look out for each other. This continues even in freedom. Young children are primarily cared for by the elders, until they are old enough for school. Oru historically formed families of choice from others who live near them.
-Solitude: alone is an odd sensation for Oru. They cannot understand why anyone would want that. They have not been allowed to be alone by choice for several centuries. Solitude was a punishment inflicted on them.
Economy:
-Use technical knowhow to support the USFP, as well as working to produce a wide variety of agricultural products for export.-Widely despise any sort of market-based economy, particularly
Government:[In development] But definitely a work in progress for them as well (they have only had had a government for less than 40 years).
Languages:
-As with culture, language was nearly eradicated. Using smuggled bits of information, and snippets of retained words, scholars have been attempting to piece together-Most Oru were fluent in Skaraan, while other languages of slaveholder races were also represented. The official language of Tsev is [whatever lingua franca the USFP uses].
-Education of the young has been a priority on Tsev. Most children are literate, but most elders are not. The Oru see improving overall education as pivotal to their survival.

I’m going to copy this into the Encyclopaedia, please let me know if you want anything changed. I would recommend choosing an average height for the Oru and giving that as a measurement, because, speaking as a human female who is 1.63 m, or 5’3″ tall, I have been to Japan and towered among tiny women who barely came up to my shoulder, and I have been to the Netherlands and felt my neck would strain from having to look up at everyone, including most women, all the time.
Obviously, you’re talking about an average height, there are going to be taller and shorter individuals, so it shouldn’t be a problem. -
